Student Scholarship Awards
At Blanchard Institute, we are dedicated to supporting graduates of Student Self Leadership beyond our four-week programs thanks to our generous donors. We invite all eligible students to apply for the Ken and Margie Blanchard Family Scholarship after completing the course.
Investing in our graduates, year after year
We are so impressed by our scholarship applicants. Student Self Leadership exists to develop the leaders of tomorrow, and our outstanding applicants affirm our purpose again and again.
When students apply, we ask them to provide academic records, educational plans, extracurricular involvement, work history, community service, awards and personal statements showcasing their individual experiences, strengths, and goals. Our aim is to grasp their identity, ambitions, and vision for the future.
Our goal is to give away ten scholarships every year on average. We believe in our Student Self Leadership graduates, and we want to invest in as many students as possible in the years to come. And guess what—you could be our next recipient!

Scholarship FAQ
When will the 2025 scholarship application window open?
Blanchard Institute is still finalizing the exact dates, but check back beginning in Februrary 2025 for an update.
What were the application criteria for the 2024 Scholarship?
In 2024, Blanchard Institute Scholarship applicants needed to:
- Be a graduating high school senior
- Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited community college, four-year university, or trade/vocational school in the United States
- Have a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Be engaged in their community through their involvement in extra-curricular, community service, and/or work activities
- Have successfully completed SSL and must submit a copy of their SSL completion badge
Additionally, they needed to reside in San Diego County in California, however this is not a requirement for the 2025 scholarships.
Do students need to live in a certain location, and why was the scholarship limited to a particular region in the past?
Because 2023 and 2024 were our first attempts at issuing scholarships, Blanchard Institute partnered with the San Diego Foundation to help manage the program, allowing us to devote more resources to student support. As part of that agreement, our scholarship recipients needed to reside in San Diego County, California.
Beginning in 2025, the scholarship will be more widely available. While students can apply regardless of where they reside currently, the scholarship is only avabile for secondary schools within the United States due to legal restrictions on transferring money across international borders.
How do I get a copy of my Student Self Leadership completion badge?
We issue completion badges through Credly, a third-party. You would have received notice via email shortly after you completed the course from the address admin@credly.com. This PDF will give you step-by-step instructions for downloading it. If you can’t find that email, we can request a new one for you. Just let us know at SSLprogram@blanchardinstitute.org.
Am I only eligible if I will be attending a college or university?
No. Students are eligible if they are continuing their post-high school education in any capacity, whether through colleges and universities, community colleges, or vocational and technical schools in the United States.
What types of expenses can I use my scholarship award for?
Our scholarship award is redeemable for a variety of educational expenditures including tuition, room and board, books and materials, etc. The scholarship amount is sent directly to the student’s chosen post-high school educational institution. It cannot be redeemed for cash.
How long after completing the course can I apply?
Students who meet the eligibility criteria may apply for the scholarship award at any time after they have earned their Student Self Leadership digital credential. However, eligible students must complete and submit their scholarship application before they begin their first year of post-high school education.
How many times can I apply?
Students may only apply for the scholarship award once.
If my child finished the Student Self Leadership program as a freshman, sophomore, or junior in high school, will they still be able to qualify for the Blanchard Scholarship when they are a senior?
Yes, your student can apply for the Blanchard Scholarship as soon as they begin their senior year of high school or their last year of secondary school.
Can my child apply for the Blanchard Scholarship if they live in or plan to live in a country other than the United States after they graduate?
Unfortunately, no. At this point, we can only offer scholarship awards to students who will be attending post-secondary school within the U.S.
